From January to September of the current year, the volume of Portugal's exports, including products and services, reached a significant value of 96.008 billion euros. This amount represents an increase of 5.457 billion euros, which corresponds to a growth of 6% compared to the same period in 2022.
However, there was a decrease in imports, which fell by 1.323 billion euros. This situation led to a trade surplus of 4.026 billion euros, reflecting an increase of 6.781 billion euros in the balance.
As reported by the Bank of Portugal, Spain was the main destination for Portuguese exports up to September 2023, accounting for 19.7% of the total exported. France (12.6%) and Germany (11.0%) also stand out among the most important destinations.
Regarding exports to countries outside the European Union, the United Kingdom leads with 9.4% of the total, being the fourth largest destination. The United States follows in fifth place, with 7.1% of exports.
During this period, sales to the United Kingdom totaled 861 million euros, a significant increase of 10.6%. Exports to France and Germany also grew, with increases of 7.2% and 8.1%, respectively.
In terms of categories of goods and services exported, the travel and tourism sector stood out with a growth of 20.3%, equivalent to an additional 3.003 billion euros. This segment constituted 21.0% of total exports. This is followed by exports of machinery and equipment (9.3%) and transport services (8.0%).
