Hello!

Here we are to continue our virtual conversation about the 5 most desired skills nowadays.

Let’s consider the following hypothetical situation: during an interview, the recruiter asks which of the 5 skills below is the most important to you and why it is. What would you say? What would be your justification? Which of these is the most important?

  1. Teamwork;
  2. Emotional intelligence/emotion control;
  3. Resilience/stress resistance;
  4. Communication skills;
  5. Proactivity

There would be no harm in defining or choosing any of them. Absolutely not! However, let’s opt for skill number 3 – Resilience/stress resistance, a much-acclaimed skill in the corporate world for a long time.

The term resilience originates from physics and refers to the ability of a given material to return to its original state without breaking after being deformed.

In the work context, being resilient is the quality of a flexible and highly adaptable employee. However, it is important to consider that to be resilient, there must be an action from the environment that causes discomfort, a crisis, or adversity. Only in the face of a sharp, real fact that could jeopardize an activity, for example, will the resilience of the individuals involved be noticed.

Let’s imagine there is a fact and you have demonstrated resilience: you had to change your vacation because a colleague needed urgent medical intervention.

Alright! Your leadership calls the team and communicates what happened with the colleague. Then, informs that they will need to adjust everyone’s vacations. There aren’t many options! You feel devastated by the news, you had made plans, and now everything has collapsed. A mix of anger and apathy sets in. But, here comes another exceptional skill: proactivity.

You reconnect and think of possibilities to make the situation as less traumatic as possible, that is, you use your emotional intelligence and invite your colleagues – through your excellent communication skills – to think of alternatives for such a sensitive situation. And, you manage to decide that you will take fewer vacation days and there will be no “gaps” in the delivery of activities until the colleague is fit to return. Voilà qui arrivé!! Nothing more resilient than such an attitude, don’t you think?!

We realize that, in any scenario (prioritizing the corporate world), all the five skills mentioned above are and will be interconnected. One reflects the other, which calls the next one and is completed by a third. It’s a connection!

But, it is important to consider that we will always have one or more of these 5 skills highlighted and, once again, there is no harm! What we need to keep in mind, always, is that we must improve them every day, enhancing those that in us need greater development.

Until next time! And, happy holidays! I mean, happy reading!!!
